Why an Ultrasound Is Important

What an Ultrasound Can Show

An ultrasound measures how far along you are (gestational age) and your estimated due date. Gestational age is especially important if you are considering a medical abortion, as the abortion pill is approved by the FDA for use only through 10 weeks of pregnancy. Without an ultrasound, it is not possible to confirm whether you fall within that timeframe.

An ultrasound can also confirm whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus. In some cases, a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, most commonly in a fallopian tube. This is called an ectopic pregnancy.

Ectopic pregnancies cannot develop normally and can become life-threatening if not treated promptly. Symptoms may not appear right away, which is why confirming the location is critical.

In addition, an ultrasound can detect whether the pregnancy is progressing. It can help identify a miscarriage, which occurs in as many as 26% of all early pregnancies. If a miscarriage has already taken place, additional medical follow-up may be necessary.
